1. Did you know that the name Pomeranian comes from the region in Europe called Pomerania, which is located in Germany and Poland? This is where the breed originates from.
  2. Pomeranians are considered a “spitz” dog, which means they’re a dog type that includes several different breeds that have common ancestors. Spitz dogs tend to have thick fur, pointy muzzles and ears, and puffy, curly tails. Some other “spitz” dogs include Huskies, Malamutes, and Akitas.
  3. Pomeranians are affectionately called Poms or Pom Poms since they’re so little and fluffy.
  4. Pomeranians have a wide variety of looks. Their coats can range from orange, red, or white to brown, black, or blue. Their fur grows long but if you get it trimmed, your Pom can look very different from the rest. 
  5. Pomeranians are indoor dogs. They do well in apartments and other small homes. They still need daily exercise, but with their small size, they don’t need a big space.
  6. Pomeranians actually used to be bigger! Before they got smaller, they used to be as big as 20 to 30 pounds but were later bred to be a smaller, toy size during Queen Victoria’s reign, who increased the Pomeranian’s popularity at the time.
  7. Did you know that Michelangelo had his Pomeranian accompany him while he painted the Sistine Chapel? The Pomeranian sat on a silky pillow while watching his master at work. 
  8. Pomeranians tend to be wary of strangers, which makes them a good watchdog if that’s what you’re looking for, but it can also mean that they bark a lot. Train them and socialize them if you don’t want them doing this.
  9. Pomeranians are known for being little, courageous fluff balls that like to take on big dogs. Who knows, this might be due to the fact that they used to be bigger. If you want your Pomeranian to get along with other dogs and avoid them getting hurt in a fight, make sure you socialize them as young as possible.
  10. Did you know that President Teddy Roosevelt owned a Pomeranian called Gem? We don’t know much about little Gem, except that he had to give up the little pup to a family member.
  11. Pomeranians seem to be very popular companions to well-known historical figures, and such is the case with Martin Luther. The leader of the Protestant Reformation had a Pomeranian named Belferlein who is said to have been mentioned often in his writing.
  12. The famous composer Wolfgang Mozart is said to have dedicated an aria to his Pomeranian called Pimperl. 
  13. Pomeranians are used as therapy dogs, and they’re very useful for this task! They can also be trained as service dogs for people who are hard-of-hearing or deaf.
  14. Did you know that two Pomeranians survived the sinking of the Titanic? Only three dogs survived the incident, one Pekingese, and two Pom Poms. One of the Poms belonged to Elizabeth Rothschild and the other to Margaret Bechstein.
  15. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Pomeranians are one of America’s top 20 most popular breeds and have been for years.
  16. There has only been one Pomeranian in all of history to win “Best in Show” at Westminster. His name was Great Elms Prince Charming II, and he was the smallest dog in the ring at his competition, weighing only 4.5 pounds. It was said that the majority of the audience loved him, and “every time he was gaited… the crowd roared its approval.”
  17. The world’s most popular Pomeranian is called Boo, who is self-proclaimed as the “World’s Cutest Dog.” Boo became Internet famous in the early 2010s on Facebook and YouTube. Boo became so popular and loved that he got the chance to travel the world and write his own book!
  18. Pomeranians can be a little stubborn when it comes to house training. It is highly recommended that they are crate trained as puppies to help make house training easier. 
  19. Did you know that the title for Guinness World Record for “Fastest Dog on Two Paws” was once held by a Pomeranian? A little Pom called Jiff achieved this great feat in 2014 but was soon overtaken by a mix called Konjo.
  20. Did you know that the oldest living Pomeranian is said to have been 25 years old? Pomeranians are considered to be one of the longest living dogs, averaging 12 to 16 years.
